Background

The Lions Club of Wanneroo was established in 1971 with 22 charter members. Over the years we have had approximately 150 members, some of whom remain. Wanneroo generally has about 25 members but has ranged between 16 and 41. Members have been active on District Cabinet and on the District Foundations and Multiple District committee.

The club has had one District Governor, three Melvin Jones recipients and also has the honour of having one of Western Australia's longest-serving Lions as a current member, Allyn Bryant, who has been a Lion for over 40 years!

Just a few of the many community services provided over the years are:
screenings for eyesight, hearing problems and blood pressure; senior citizens' outings; assisting a blind girl with specialised equipment; garden cleanups; supply Quinn's Life Saving Club with a surf rescue board; purchase of a Saddle for Riding for the Disabled; working with the St John Ambulance to purchase a First Aid post; purchase of a Hart Walker for a boy with Cerebral Palsy, provision of a medical plinth for Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Fund raising to support these projects has included: quiz nights, raffles, dances, sale of Lions Christmas cakes and Lions mints, and recycling newspapers.

The Lions Club of Wanneroo was originally one of two clubs in the, then, Shire of Wanneroo, which has subsequently split into the City of Wanneroo and the City of Joondalup. There are now about 7 clubs in the same area, which is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia. Wanneroo is well known and respected for its service in its community, its District, and at Multiple District.
